Background

Mellon Educate, formerly known as Mellon Housing Initiative (MHI) is a
development organization, founded by Irish philanthropist Niall Mellon in
2002 and registered as a South African Not for Profit (NPO) organization in
2004. MHI has more than 16 years experience in the NPO sector, with a
strong record of large scale delivery and has completed in excess of
25,000 social houses, providing safe and quality homes to more than
125,000 South Africans. 22 000 volunteers from Ireland and several
countries across the world have contributed enormously to this success.

Mellon Educate was launched In 2014 as Niall Mellon recognized that the
provision of quality homes in South Africa had reached a sustainable level
and was a strong focus of the South African government. Mellon Educate
was formed to address the urgent need to support under resourced and
under performing schools in the country. Redoubling his commitments to
South Africa and its development, Niall Mellon pledged a new 10-year
education development programme, in partnership with the South African
Government with a vision to reach a minimum of 100 000 learners by 2025.

Our International volunteers continue to support us in this goal through our
construction partnerships for the upgrading of schools.
