Prefer first one Not sure about the first one and asking people what they doing with their lives, seems judgemental.
The Mellon Educate volunteer programme is an opportunity of a lifetime. You can’t put a price on the rewards of this volunteer program, both for you and South Africa’s most needy children. You’ll be changing lives and directly addressing the country’s triple challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality.
Volunteers will be working towards uplifting South Africa’s most destitute township schools. We call it a “Blitz” and there are two options for volunteers. One is to teach and the other is to build.
Teach or Build
For the duration of your stay, the Mellon Team will be on the ground to welcome and care for you. You will stay in a comfortable and centrally located hotel on a Bed & Breakfast basis. Transport will be arranged from your hotel to school each day.
Before we can book you on a Blitz you’ll need to fundraise, but don’t be discouraged. The Mellon Team will support you every step of the way to achieve your fundraising targets. With a wealth of knowledge and 15 years’ experience, we’ll share all our tricks and tips with you.

As a qualified teacher you will work side-by-side with local teachers in Mellon Educate Community Schools in the townships we support.
In volunteering, teachers will work in schools alongside teachers in their classrooms. Your volunteering activities will include a range of exciting and fulfilling tasks. You’ll support principals and teachers in their various teaching tasks and administrative jobs. You’ll share experience and mentor good practice. You’ll work with teachers on advancing their current teaching material.
It’s our mission in the years ahead to improve the education for 100,000 disadvantaged children. Your teacher mentoring will directly impact this goal.
Make it a summer to remember.
November 2016 brought 270 volunteers returning to rebuild and renovate schools in the township of Khayelitsha in Cape Town. We completed 13 new classrooms, 2 toilet blocks, 1 kitchen and renovated 7 other buildings. All this was done in just one week. The rewards for your success as a volunteer on the building blitz are spectacular – both for you and the children whose lives you are changing.
No construction experience is necessary to join, merely a desire to make a difference and a work hard ethos .
